My dog/cat is fat! Does he/she need a light food or an obesity diet?

The biggest fear among owners is that their dogs/cats will go hungry and, in fact, many are not aware of the disease and ineffectiveness of certain light foods sold on the market that do not help in some cases of obesity and even contribute to the owner giving up even before reaching the goal.

If your pet is obese, as much as it may be hard to admit, obesity is a disease and should be treated/monitored by a veterinarian who will designate a specific feeding plan . In fact, choosing a good diet for your pet to lose and maintain weight is also one of the determining factors in weight loss.

What is a good diet for obesity or being overweight?

Dietary intervention with energy restriction is the only effective treatment for animals to lose weight. It has been observed that a 25% restriction, in addition to reducing weight and body mass, can reduce serum triglycerides, triiodothyronine, insulin and glucose levels, all of which are indicators of aging.

Dietary intervention is most effective if combined with physical activity, so owners are advised to increase the amount of physical exercise their dog or cat gets as an integral part of a weight loss program.

However, in dietary intervention, simply reducing the amount of food is not a good practice , as in addition to causing dissatisfaction in the animal and a greater feeling of appetite, it can cause a deficiency in essential nutrients.

The ideal is to use a specific diet, which takes into account the following:

  • Control of the feeling of satiety
  • Reduced energy density - increase fiber intake and reduce fat intake
  • Good palatability
