7 Tips for Choosing the Right Cat Litter Box
One of the most common complaints from cat owners is elimination problems, i.e., peeing and pooping outside the correct place.
One of the main causes of this type of problem is the litter box . An unsuitable litter box can cause, in addition to elimination in inappropriate places, conflicts between cats, and even health problems associated with stress (feline idiopathic cystitis, for example).
What details should we pay attention to when choosing a litter box for our cat(s)?
1. Size of the box – The bigger the better, the ideal size should be 1.5 times the size of the cat (length from nose to base of tail).
2. Number of litter boxes – Ideally, we should provide one litter box per cat, and at least one extra. It is important that they have the option to choose if one is dirtier, or if they prefer to pee in one and poop in another, or even if another cat prevents them from accessing a litter box.
3. Location – The boxes should be in quiet and easily accessible places. Avoid busy areas or windows that face the outside. Please note that having 2 boxes side by side is the same as having just one; they must be in different places. It is also important that they are not near food or water. If the house has more than one floor, it is important that there is at least one box per floor.
4. Sand – Although it varies, cats prefer soft, fine, odorless sand. Clumping sand is easier to clean. Litter tray liners should also be avoided. It is important to ensure a minimum depth of about 7 cm of sand so that they can dig and bury their feces.
5. Covered or not? – Each cat has its own preference, but we must bear in mind that if we cannot see or smell it, we will be more likely to forget to clean our cat’s box .
6. With or without a door? – Once again, some cats like it and others don’t. We should introduce the door gradually and make sure that the cat is not afraid to use it.
7. Cleaning – This is one of the most important aspects that should never be neglected. We should remove the waste twice a day and thoroughly clean the box weekly. We should use warm water and a good dish detergent ( without scent ) to wash the tray weekly. At most every 2 years the box should be replaced.
Litter Box Changes
If the cat is a baby, we must pay attention to the height of access, as they may not be able to climb into the box. In the case of older cats or cats with motor limitations, we must make access easier and avoid using boxes with higher access that involve jumping.
It is very important that any changes you make are gradual, that is, whenever you want to introduce a change you should leave the existing option and make the new option available and let the cat choose. As soon as it starts using the new option, you can remove the previous one.
